Former Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch retires from State Department - NBC News

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, a central figure in the impeachment investigation into President Donald Trump, retired from the State Department on Friday after three decades in the foreign service, a person familiar with her plans confirmed.

Yovanovitch testified in the U.S. House of Representatives that her reputation was smeared by Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who seized on disinformation that she had been badmouthing the president and blocking corruption investigations into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

She denied all the allegations under oath, and her colleagues have testified that she was the victim of disinformation tactics that had been used on U.S. officials for years.

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

Yovanovitch, who was recalled from her post last year, had most recently been serving as a senior State Department fellow at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service, although she was not teaching classes this semester. The retirement was first reported by NPR.

She had been a foreign service officer for 33 years and served in six presidential administrations, four Republican and two Democrat.

She was appointed as an ambassador three times, twice by President George W. Bush and once by President Barack Obama. She served as ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Armenia and then Ukraine during her career.

Indicted Giuliani associate Lev Parnas has said that Trump ordered Yovanovitch's removal at a dinner after Parnas said he told the president that she had been bad-mouthing him, and that the president ordered her fired several times before she was recalled.

Parnas told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow earlier this month that he was sorry for having believed Yovanovitch had bad-mouthed Trump and regrets certain things he did, "like hurting the ambassador."

Parnas said the effort to get the Ukrainians to announce an investigation involved the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, on whose board Hunter Biden served during his father's vice presidency.

Parnas said the effort was "all about" the Bidens and "never about corruption." He also said the Burisma inquiry was the sole reason Yovanovitch was recalled. "That was the only motivation," he said.

In the impeachment trial Friday, the Senate failed to pass an effort to call witnesses and his acquittal in the Republican-controlled chamber seems likely next week.

The articles of impeachment allege Trump abused the power of his office to pressure Ukraine’s president to announce investigations into the Bidens for his own political gain, and obstruction of Congress.

Both CNN and NPR reported Friday that Yovanovitch had retired from her role sometime within the last two weeks, though the exact time of her departure was not made immediately clear. The former ambassador was most recently serving as a senior State Department fellow at Georgetown University.

Yovanovitch played a key role in the House's impeachment inquiry into Trump, serving as a witness as she discussed the president's dealings in Ukraine as well as her ouster from her ambassador position. She testified that she was pushed out of her role by Giuliani, Trump's personal lawyer, and his associates, alleging they were behind what she says are false attacks that influenced Trump's decision to have her removed.

Giuliani has denied any wrongdoing, but admitted to telling Trump that Yovanovitch was blocking Biden investigations.

However, evidence later released by the House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Oversight and Reform committees appeared to back up Yovanovitch's claims and further showed she was possibly being surveilled by Giuliani's associates. Communications between indicted Giuliani associate Lev Parnas and Connecticut congressional candidate Robert Hyde, for example, hinted that the ambassador was being watched.

That evidence has since sparked an investigation by the State Department.

Recently released audio recordings also appear to capture Trump and Giuliani associates discussing the ambassador's removal.

Wabup Natuna Tolak Wilayah Jadi Tempat Transit WNI dari China, Ini Alasannya - detikNews

Natuna -

Wakil Bupati Natuna, Kepulauan Riau (Kepri), Ngesti Yuni Suprapti menolak keras bila wilayahnya dijadikan tempat transit bahkan karantina WNI dari China. Wabup Natuna mengungkapkan kekhawatiran soal terbawanya virus corona dari China.

"Kita menolak, masyarakat menolak. Natuna mau dijadikan apa?

"Kita khawatir virus corona masuk.

Tentu ingin menyelamatkan diri," kata dia.

Jalani Pemeriksaan Suhu Tubuh

Petugas medis menyeberang menuju gedung National Centre for Infectious Diseases di RS Tan Tock Seng, Singapura, Jumat (31/1/2020).AFP/ROSLAN RAHMAN Petugas medis menyeberang menuju gedung National Centre for Infectious Diseases di RS Tan Tock Seng, Singapura, Jumat (31/1/2020).

Menurut Lawrence Wong, jumlah pelancong dari China menurun drastis sebanyak 80 persen semenjak wabah virus corona menyebar, apalagi China melarang tur grup outbound.

"Semakin cepat pemerintah menangani penyebaran wabah virus corona, maka semakin cepat segala hal kembali berjalan normal.

King of The King menjadi kasus terbaru dari Indonesia.

Dokumennya tertulis cap 'Union Bank of Switzerland'. Tulisan paling atas berbunyi 'Asset Induk Dunia C.01/505/103'.

Leader dari King of The King Sukabumi bernama Moch Harzanto.

Klaim serupa digunakan oleh para penipun pendahulu King of The King.

'Tongkat Estafet' Brexit di Tangan Theresa May

May terpilih menjadi PM pada 13 Juli 2016.

Namun, keberuntungan tampak tak melekat pada May. Parlemen tetap berkeras tak mau mengikuti proposal Brexit gagasan May sehingga mendorongnya meminta Uni Eropa mengulur tenggat waktu Brexit menjadi 31 Oktober 2019.

Pada Juli 2019, mantan menteri luar negeri Inggris, Boris Johnson, memenangkan pemilihan PM pengganti May.

Sekitar awal Oktober, Johnson berhasil meloloskan Brexit gagasannya.

Parlemen tak mendukung gagasannya hingga memicu tenggat waktu Brexit kembali diperpanjang hingga 31 Januari 2020.

3 Takeaways from Today's Trump Impeachment Trial - The New York Times

WASHINGTON — After 10 days of arguments and deliberations, the Senate voted against hearing from new witnesses in President Trump’s impeachment trial, signaling a vote to acquit him would likely come in the coming days.

House impeachment managers and President Trump’s defense team made their final arguments for and against hearing from new witnesses as the Senate trial entered its final stages on Friday before the evening vote. Not long before the session started, Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska, announced that she would vote against a measure to hear new witnesses erasing any doubt that the Republicans would have the support to end the trial without considering new material.

Here are five key takeaways from the afternoon.

In a nearly party-line vote, the Senate decided not to hear testimony from witnesses or review evidence before it moves to vote on whether Mr. Trump should be removed from office.

The 51-49 outcome was not surprising and paved the way for the Senate to acquit Mr. Trump. Senate leaders are negotiating over the next steps to end the trial.

Many of the arguments from the House managers over the past two weeks have been centered on the importance of hearing from witnesses, like Mr. Trump’s former national security adviser, John R. Bolton, who has firsthand accounts of Mr. Trump’s actions regarding Ukraine.

Two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Mitt Romney of Utah, voted in favor of hearing witnesses, as they had signaled ahead of the trial.

Democrats have said that a trial without witnesses and documents is not a fair one. Republicans said that they did not need to hear any additional information and that the Democrats brought a weak case.

The top Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer of New York, said the trial was a sham and a tragedy.

“To not allow a witness, a document — no witnesses, no documents — in an impeachment trial is a perfidy,” Mr. Schumer said after the vote. “America will remember this day, unfortunately, where the Senate did not live up to its responsibilities.”

In the hours before the vote, House impeachment managers made their final plea, citing a New York Times report that published about an hour before the trial started.

The report, which draws from new details from an upcoming book by Mr. Bolton, shows that Mr. Trump had a direct role in the Ukraine pressure campaign earlier than previously known, and senior White House advisers were aware of it.

“Yet another reason why we want to hear from witnesses,” said Representative Adam B. Schiff, Democrat of California and the lead manager.

In the book, Mr. Bolton describes a meeting in early May at which Mr. Trump instructed him to call President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine to press him to meet with Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani. According to the book, one of Mr. Trump’s defense lawyers for the impeachment trial, Pat Cipollone, was also in the meeting, which took place months before Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelensky spoke by phone on July 25. That conversation ultimately set the impeachment proceedings in motion.

The fight over witnesses had largely been an argument about hearing testimony from Mr. Bolton, particularly as details about what he knows of Mr. Trump’s motives and his efforts to pressure Ukraine emerged in the past week.

Mr. Trump blocked Mr. Bolton from testifying in the House impeachment inquiry, but Mr. Bolton has said he would comply with a subpoena to testify during the Senate trial.

Even before the Senate trial resumed on Friday, some Republican senators announced their plans to vote to acquit Mr. Trump, and there was noticeably less note-taking in the Senate chamber compared with previous days of the trial.

“Can anyone doubt that at least half of the country would view his removal as illegitimate — as nothing short of a coup d’Ă©tat?” Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, wrote in a statement on Friday.

His decision, he said, was made out of concern of further dividing the country.

Mr. Rubio added that if the president was removed from office, it would be a victory for President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

“It is difficult to conceive of any scheme Putin could undertake that would undermine confidence in our democracy more than removal would,” he wrote.

Senator Rob Portman, Republican of Ohio, said that he did find some of Mr. Trump’s actions “wrong and inappropriate,” but he wanted to leave it to voters decide on a verdict in November.

“Our country is already too deeply divided and we should be working to heal wounds, not create new ones,” Mr. Portman said in a statement.

“It seems it was half a trial,” said John F. Kelly, Mr. Trump’s former chief of staff, hours before the Senate officially voted.

“If I was advising the United States Senate, I would say, ‘If you don’t respond to 75 percent of the American voters and have witnesses, it’s a job only half-done,’” Mr. Kelly said, ahead of delivering a speech in New Jersey on Friday. “You open yourself up forever as a Senate that shirks its responsibilities.”

Mr. Kelly appeared to be referring to a recent national poll from Quinnipiac University, which found that 75 percent of independents think witnesses should testify. The independent vote is expected to be a critical one in November.

A retired four-star Marine general, Mr. Kelly was well-liked in the Senate — he was confirmed with bipartisan support to be Mr. Trump’s first homeland security secretary — which made his criticism on Friday even more pointed. He was later drafted to be the president’s chief of staff with the hope he would bring order to a White House defined by chaos.

Earlier this week, Mr. Kelly said he believed Mr. Bolton’s account of the president’s dealings with Ukraine, which the president has denied.

“If John Bolton says that in the book, I believe John Bolton,” he said on Tuesday.

Mr. Kelly and Mr. Bolton overlapped at the White House for much of 2018 but were not always in lock step. On Friday, Mr. Kelly described Mr. Bolton as “an honest and an honorable guy,” and “a copious note-taker.”

Senators will vote at 4 p.m. on Wednesday to render a verdict in President Trump’s impeachment trial. But before then, they will vote on procedural motions on Friday and return at 11 a.m. on Monday to give closing arguments, senators said. They will also have a chance to give floor speeches on Tuesday before the Wednesday vote.

“I’d rather conclude it right away,” said Senator Roy Blunt, Republican of Missouri. But the rules allowed for more time, and Democrats insisted, he added.

“It gives everybody the flexibility if they need to go somewhere over the weekend,” said Senator Mike Braun, Republican of Indiana.

The schedule means Mr. Trump would deliver the State of the Union address Tuesday night with his all but certain acquittal pending.

For the four senators running for the Democratic nomination to face Mr. Trump in November, it will be a busy few days as they rush to Iowa ahead of the caucuses there on Monday before needing to return to Washington for the closing phase of the trial.

Trump Administration Restricts Entry Into U.S. From China - The New York Times

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration will put into place temporary travel restrictions that will bar entry into the United States by any foreign national who has traveled to China in the past 14 days, administration officials announced on Friday.

The temporary restrictions, a reaction to the novel coronavirus that was deemed a public health emergency by the World Health Organization, will be put into place at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2. The United States on Friday also declared the coronavirus, which has sickened more than 9,700 people in Asia and has spread to the United States and 20 other countries, a public heath emergency.

The action will restrict all foreign nationals who have been to China — other than immediate family members of American citizens and permanent residents — from entering the United States.

In addition, officials said, any American citizen returning to the United States from the Hubei Province in China will be subject to up to 14 days of mandatory quarantine, and any American citizen returning to the country who has visited the rest of mainland China within the past 14 days will undergo proactive entry health screening at selective ports of entry, as well as 14 days of self-quarantine.

Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, is in Hubei.

Administration officials did not say how long the “temporary” measures would be in place.

But they said the United States will also funnel all flights from China to just a few airports, including John F. Kennedy International Airport, Chicago’s O’Hare, Los Angeles International Airport and San Francisco International Airport.

The travel restrictions were announced Friday by Alex Azar, the health secretary, who declared that the coronavirus posed “a public health emergency in the United States.”

Mr. Azar and other members of an administration task force assembled to address the virus sought to play down public fears about an outbreak“The risk at this time to the American public is low,” said Robert R. Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “This is a serious health situation in China, but I want to emphasize the risk to the American public currently is low. Our goal is to do all we can do to keep it that way.”

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the actions were being taken because there were “a lot of unknowns” surrounding the virus and its transmission path. Unlike influenza, which is fairly predictable in terms of infection and mortality, Dr. Fauci said there was not the same certainty about the transmission rate and path of the coronavirus.

“The number of cases have steeply inclined with every day,” Dr. Fauci said.

The administration’s announcement came as major air carriers said they were suspending flights between the United States and mainland China.

Administration officials said the president’s action did not constitute a travel ban, since immediate family members of American citizens and permanent residents would still be allowed into the country.

“There is no travel ban,” said Joel Szabat, an assistant secretary at the Department of Transportation.

Administration officials have been debating internally over the past few days about whether instituting travel restrictions would be seen as an alarmist reaction to a virus that so far has affected only a handful of people in the United States. And Mr. Trump had expressed concerns about the economic impact of any restriction or ban, according to people familiar with his thinking.

Members of the National Security Council had argued in favor of the travel restrictions, given the rapid spread of the virus and a backlog in testing at the C.D.C.

Despite the administration’s efforts to minimize the actions they announced, lawmakers in Congress who had been pushing Mr. Trump to impose a travel ban said the measures announced on Friday were significant and had their full support.

“By imposing temporary travel restrictions on China, the president has taken decisive action to protect Americans against the Wuhan coronavirus,” said Republican Senator Tom Cotton, from Arkansas, who has been aggressively pushing the administration to impose a targeted travel ban.

The American airline industry separately took steps to restrict travel between the United States and China. The announcement by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines that direct air service would be halted for months sent shocks through the stock market and rattled industries that depend on the flow of goods and people between the world’s largest economies.

The airlines’ move underscored the seriousness of the health crisis, fanning new fears about a worldwide economic downturn and contributing to growing unease about how widely, deeply and quickly the virus might spread.

Mr. Azar said the administration was not trying to raise alarms but that Americans should view its actions as a sign that their government was “taking responsible steps to protect them.”

A View of Brexit From the Soccer Field - The New York Times

PORTSMOUTH, England — The team bus for the Leyton Orient women’s soccer team can sometimes be stifling. More than a dozen players sit, shoulder-to-shoulder, for hours in tedium under fluorescent blue lights (and in fear of having to use the one bathroom). There is, at least, free tea.

The team’s striker, Otesha Charles, a dual citizen of Guyana and Britain, owns a hair salon in south London and eats Sainsbury’s salmon sandwiches before games. Cheryl Anderson, an accountant and defender from Scotland, is so soft-spoken and nice that it can be stunning to see her dive into a hard slide tackle. The others are teachers, postal workers, lawyers and a London subway driver.

And then there is me, a former collegiate athlete from America who landed in London last January at a moment when every day brought another screaming headline about how Brexit had torn the country apart.

“We had to move forward before the damage caused became irreparable,” one Briton lamented.

On the surface, our team is a snapshot of Britain, containing many of its divisions. There are Leavers and Remainers. There are immigrants from different corners of the world, transplanted Europeans and players from across Britain.

On hourslong bus rides to bleak stadiums, I started to understand this country a little better through the personal stories of my teammates more than I had from any shouting lawmaker or television talking head.

Two players talked about insufficient government funding at state schools where they taught. Another who had endured several knee surgeries emphasized the importance of the National Health Service. And everyone complained about the train delays.

Some of the European players who want to continue living and working in Britain were working to secure their settled status before Brexit takes full effect at the end of this year.

Leyton Orient was just one team, in one city, in a country with deep economic, social and political division. But seeing everything through the prism of Brexit wasn’t how these women lived.

On a particularly wet Sunday in December, we drove a few hours to Portsmouth, a city on England’s south coast that voted overwhelmingly to leave the European Union. It was so cold that the stadium served Bovril — a kind of salty, meaty broth engineered to warm fans during the bleakest weather. The field was a waterlogged pit of mud, beaten into submission by never-ending rain.

One teammate saw my horrified gaze and smiled: “Welcome to English football.”

The fear that Brexit has polarized Britain beyond repair is often discussed by commentators. But activities like sports, music clubs and communal gardens — the “micro-publics” of everyday life — can change how people from different backgrounds or political leanings think and interact with one another.

“Physical proximity in its own right doesn’t yield a huge amount,” said Ash Amin, a geography professor at the University of Cambridge. “But if the shared activity lasts, then the political discussion may follow. And disagreement may not close down the dialogue because of the civility that arises from a shared activity and shared space.”

Our two starting central midfielders are an example. They play together seamlessly, bouncing one-and-two-touch passes off each other, but off the field they’re two very different people.

Fran Ali, a 26-year-old midfielder from east London, works as a planning specialist for Britain’s rail system. She said she voted for Brexit because she wanted Britain to have more control over its future.

“I’m not too into politics, don’t get me wrong,” she said later at a packed pub back in London. “But my main reason voting for leave was so that we could control our laws, our borders and our money.”

Her midfield partner is Egle Trezzi, a 31-year-old photographer from outside Milan who moved to Britain more than a decade ago and teaches at Goldsmiths University in London.

“Personally, I think it’s a stupid idea,” she said of Brexit as we drove home from a game in January, under the kind of sky that suggests the sun will never come out again. “I don’t support it, and whatever happens, it’s going to be bad.”

Fran said she recalled once teasing Egle for “being lefty,” but said they had never gotten into an argument over politics. “I respect her views, and she respects mine.”

In November, when we played in Cheltenham — an area that voted to remain — the general election was just weeks away. Prime Minister Boris Johnson was campaigning on a promise to “get Brexit done,” while the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats offered another vote on Brexit.

But we didn’t talk about any of that.

The muddy field defined our world that day as we picked one another up out of wet holes, cleared clods of earth from our cleats and laughed at who was the dirtiest. We won the game 1-0 and, for the first time in the team’s history, made it to the second round of the FA Cup, one of the world’s oldest soccer tournaments.

We were promised a celebratory dinner on the ride home, but this was a Sunday in England and almost everything was closed. At a gas station, we bought cheap beers and canned gin and tonics instead.

At a January game against Cambridge City, a university town that overwhelmingly supported staying in the bloc, the locker room was covered in a thin layer of filth. A sign taped to the wall said, “Please do not clean your boots in the showers.” The showers were cold.

There was no trainer with us that day, so the players started getting one another ready for the game: taping ankles, stretching hamstrings, passing around any pain reliever we had.

“Football is its own form of communication, and it’s often a nonverbal form of communication,” said Becca Hirst, 23, who grew up playing in Liverpool and voted to remain.

But she wondered whether soccer on its own was enough to bridge any real divides. “How far do the people that you meet playing football translate into your everyday politics, your everyday actions, your feelings toward other people?”

Some British voters said they favored leaving the bloc so that Britain could have more control over immigration and over who is allowed to live and work in the country.

But that debate revived questions around British identity — including who is British and who is not.

Otesha came to Britain when she was seven years old, and said she remembered feeling like an outsider. The other students at her school “wanted to hear my little Caribbean accent,” she said. “I didn’t feel British. I knew I was Guyanese in England.”

She credits soccer with helping shape her sense of British identity. “Having a big team of 22 girls, I started to feel like this was my community,” she said. “I am a part of England and everything that comes with it.”

Britain’s official departure from the European Union on Friday is mostly symbolic. The transition period is due to last through the end of the year, allowing time for negotiations over trade and other relations.

But maybe once the tie is formally cut, people on both sides of Brexit can reconcile.

“There are people on this team who voted leave and who voted remain, and it had no impact on our team ethos or hanging out outside of football,” said Sophie Le Marchand, a 31-year-old player from Worcester who is a teacher. “It had no impact whatsoever.”

John Delaney Announces Decision to Withdraw From 2020 Race - kwwl.com

DES MOINES, Iowa (KWWL) - In a press release from John Delaney's campaign team, Delaney officially announces his withdrawal from the 2020 race.

This decision made was after internal analyses reported Delaney's support is not sufficient to meet the 15% viability in a number of caucus precincts. John Delaney's statement on his withdrawal is below.

“It has been a privilege to campaign for the Democratic nomination for President, but it is clear that God has a different purpose for me at this moment in time.  I leave this race with a profound sense of gratitude to the voters who shared with me their hopes and concerns for our magnificent country, in admiration for the other contenders for the nomination and proud of the work we did to change the debate.

I want to thank my team members, particularly those who loyally stood with me these last few months, our volunteers, supporters and friends for their incredible work, encouragement and support during our campaign.  It was a privilege to work with you on this journey, I will be grateful for you until my last days and I look forward to our work ahead. Most importantly, I want to thank my extraordinary wife, April, and my amazing daughters, Summer, Brooke, Lily and Grace, for their love and encouragement.  I thank God, every day, for the love and blessing of my family.

We need to provide workable solutions to the economic issues facing hardworking Americans, create opportunity for young people in all communities, restore a sense of unity and common purpose to our nation, and re-establish the United States as an engaged global leader. I believe our campaign was unique in its consistent focus on these four themes. Our economic, environmental and technological future is dependent upon the choices we make and the actions we take. For too long we have made bad choices and failed to act; we must change course.

This race was never about me, but about ideas and doing what’s right for our nation. The unique and data-driven ideas that our campaign generated – on how to create a functional universal health care system, price carbon, advance trade, invest in rural America, cure disease, help workers, launch negative emissions technologies, reform education, and expand national service – are now ideas for the party and I will continue to advocate for them in my next chapter.  In addition, I encourage the party to sharpen its focus on the growing opportunity inequality that exists in both rural America and struggling urban communities.  The concentration of start-ups and investment capital in a small number of areas is troubling and smart public policy is needed to encourage entrepreneurs to start businesses everywhere.  Smart public-private partnerships can encourage entrepreneurs to locate in small-town America and struggling inner cities.

Never bet against the United States of America. This is a remarkable nation full of wonderful and patriotic people.  People who love their country, their neighbors and their families. People who work tirelessly, who innovate, and who give of their time and resources.  People who care, deeply, about the character and decency of this nation.  Because of them, we have every advantage any nation could possibly want to have in 2020, except for one problem: we are a deeply divided nation. The good news is that we can fix that problem, but we have to fix it together. Step one is to beat Donald Trump and restore decency to the Office of the President.  In many ways, this is all that matters and I am fully committed to supporting our nominee and fulfilling that mission.  Step two is to get our government working for the American people again.  Step three is to focus on the future and leave the world better than we found it. The Democratic party must respond to this calling.

Let’s stop the nonsense of unrealistic and divisive campaign promises and be the party the American people need – a decent, unifying, future-focused and common-sense party. And please don’t listen to the cynics, the naysayers and the dividers; while we have significant challenges and too many Americans are struggling, the world gets better every year and the United States of America has driven much of this progress - let’s keep it that way.

Onward and upward and God Bless America.”
