Google employees will probably continue working from home until the end of this year, CEO Sundar Pichai told workers this week.

A company spokesperson confirmed that Pichai in an internal meeting Thursday also said employees who must return to offices will be able to do so starting in June or July, with extra safety precautions to prevent coronavirus transmission.

The Mountain View digital advertising giant had earlier told workers that its remote-work policy imposed because of the pandemic would remain in place until at least June 1, and a “staggered” and “incremental” approach would be taken for coming back to offices.

Separately, Facebook told digital-news website The Information it was planning to re-open offices July 6 but would let employees work from home through the end of 2020 if they wished.

Facebook did not immediately respond to a question from this news organization about whether it would continue to pay its contract workers who can’t work from home, as it said in March it was doing.

The Menlo Park social media firm’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said last month that Facebook was canceling in-person company gatherings of 50 or more people through June of next year.
