It’s not hard for Californians to know whom to thank in 2020. Four million acres of the Golden State went up in flames this fall. We thank — profoundly and prodigiously — the fire, police and emergency personnel, as well as the prison volunteers, who risked their own safety to protect us. My wife and I had to evacuate twice this year. When we finally returned to our smoky house (which had just been repaired from last year’s inferno), we didn’t take for granted that it was still there. On behalf of 40 million Californians, let me utter a humongous gracias.
