Just Four Days Ago
• No. 2 Michigan and Michigan State met Thursday (March 4) at Crisler Center, as the Wolverines won, 69-50, to clinch the 2021 Big Ten regular-season title.
• After battling back-and-forth throughout the first 10 minutes, the Wolverines built an 11-point halftime lead. Despite the Spartans coming out with four quick points to start the second half, U-M went on a 10-0 run to help build a 17-point lead. Balancing its inside play with long-range buckets, U-M saw that lead expand to as much as 28 points as the Wolverines coasted to the victory.
• Sophomore Franz Wagner led U-M with 19 points, knocking down a season-high four three-pointers, while grabbing six rebounds. Freshman Hunter Dickinson used a 14-point, 10-rebound effort to post his fifth double-double of the season, while Isaiah Livers, Eli Brooks and Mike Smith all chipped in nine points apiece.
• U-M shot 50.0 percent (26-for-52) from the field, while MSU shot 36.4 percent and did not make a three-pointer, going 0-for-9. Michigan held the Michigan State to its second-lowest scoring output on the season (50). The Wolverines outrebounded the Spartans, 34-28.

U-M and the Big Ten Title

• In what has turned out to be a unique season, the Big Ten regular-season title was agreed to be determined by overall winning percentage as many schedules fluctuated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Needing to win one of its last two games (both against Michigan State), Michigan clinched the Big Ten title after their 69-50 win against the Spartans on Thursday (March 4). With a current winning percentage of 87.5%, there are no mathematical scenarios that would not allow U-M to finish atop the conference.
• The regular-season crown is the 15th in U-M history and first since the Wolverines won the 2014 title by three games thanks to the play of Big Ten Player of the Year Nik Stauskas.
• The regular season titles makes the Wolverines the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament for just the second time in program history (2014).

Making His Mark in U-M Coaching History

• With Michigan's 69-50 victory over Michigan State on Thursday (March 4), Juwan Howard won his 38th game as the head coach of the Wolverines. That total is tops in program history for a second-year head coach, surpassing his former coach Steve Fisher, who tallied 37 wins in his first two full seasons as head coach (non-interim).

U-M Coaching Win Totals After Two Seasons
Coach Wins
Juwan Howard 38 (season still active)
Steve Fisher 37
John Beilein 31
Tommy Amaker 29
Bill Frieder 27
Johnny Orr 23

• Howard finished with a 19-12 mark last season before the postseason was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So far this season, Howard's Wolverines are 19-2 heading into the regular-season finale at Michigan State and the postseason.

Some Cool Stuff to Know Right Away

Isaiah Livers needs 22 points to reach 1,000 in his U-M career.
Mike Smith needs three assists to reach 500 in his collegiate career.
Franz Wagner has tallied a third of his total scoring over the last six games (92 of 274 points, 33.6 percent). He has three 20+ point games, which included a season-high 21 in back-to-back games -- at Ohio State (Feb. 21) and Iowa (Feb. 25).
• Freshman Hunter Dickinson, a seven-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week, continues to lead U-M in scoring (14.3), rebounding (7.8), blocks (31; 1.5 bpg) and field goal percentage (.606).
Isaiah Livers has continued to show his versatility as one of U-M's top two-way players. He averages 13.9 points per game, with a team-high five 20+ point games. However it isn't just his scoring, he is averaging career-bests for rebounding (6.2; 130 total) and assists (2.1 apg; 42 total).
• With a team-high 49 3-pointers, Isaiah Livers is one long-range bucket away from reaching 50 this season and hitting that mark for the second time in his career (52 in 2018-19).
Mike Smith is averaging 5.0 assists per game, which is third in the Big Ten. He has recorded 11 games with 6+ assists, including a career-high 10 at Minnesota (Jan. 6) -- his first double digit performance of his collegiate career.
• Smith also leads U-M in long-range shooting (48.9 percent). Hard to imagine after he started 1-for-9 to begin the season, but since that start, he is 23-for-43 (53.4 percent).
