An Update From AD Jon Gilbert - East Carolina University Athletics - ECUPirates.com

Pirate Nation:

We are always going to celebrate the victories and we are coming off a great weekend for the Pirates. Our student-athletes have faced many obstacles over the past year with the pandemic, but they continue to compete at a high level while representing the purple and gold. It's important we recognize their accomplishments because it took perseverance and commitment to continue to fight through adversity.

Here's a glimpse of what your Pirates did last weekend:

Spring Game canceled
We announced yesterday that the football spring game will not be held in 2021. I understand this is disappointing news, but we feel this is the best decision after the recent pause in the football program due to COVID.

We returned to the practice field yesterday and have nine practices remaining this spring. Coach Houston is working on completing all the practices during the allowable time period and will close the spring with a practice in front of the student-athlete's families.

Our plan is to welcome fans back to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in August for "Meet The Pirates" and then in full capacity when we host South Carolina in Greenville on Sept. 11.

Did you get your football season tickets?
We are less than a month away from the priority deadline for football season tickets. Season ticket sales are currently at 6,605 and we need that number to really increase heading into the priority deadline. Call our ticket office at 252-737-4500 and ask about our payment plan because we need you in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in the fall. You can also purchase tickets online at ECUPirates.com.

You can visit ECUPirateClub.com for more information or call (252) 737-4540.

Big week ahead for spirit squads
This is a big week for our cheer and dance squads led by head coaches' Susie Glynn and Kristin Jeffries, respectively, as they are competing in the NCA and NDA Collegiate Championships this week in Daytona Beach, Fla. The prelims begin tomorrow and both teams will compete for their respective national championships on Friday. You can watch the competition this week at https://tv.varsity.com/

It has been a year of inconveniences for both squads with the different protocols put in place and we are looking forward to having both squads together again in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium this fall. We really appreciate their understanding and cooperation the past year.

Bri Wood earns all-conference honors
Senior Bri Wood was named to the 2020 American Athletic Conference First-Team on Monday. Bri is only the second player in program history to earn first-team honors in the American Athletic Conference. Despite a shortened season due to COVID, she led the team with 156 kills.

Softball back home
The softball team returns to Greenville this weekend to host conference foe Central Florida beginning Friday with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. After tonight's contest at UNCW, the team will have played 17 consecutive road games so getting back in front of our home fans will be a welcome respite.

Appalachian State tickets go on sale soon
Tickets for the Appalachian State football game on Thursday, September 2 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte will go on sale this week. Tickets will be available for Pirate Club members only for two weeks before being open to the general public. Student tickets will be available beginning in late June.

New Pirates on medical staff
I hope you will join me in welcoming several new additions to the Pirate Family.

Herb Reinhard joined the athletics department in March as assistant athletics director for medical services and he will serve as the lead football athletic trainer. In addition, Herb will be responsible for the daily oversight of the entire sports medicine division.

Herb spent the last four years at Ole Miss where he worked exclusively with the football program as an assistant athletic trainer.  He has also spent time at the United States Military Academy, Troy (Ala.) University and the Washington Football Club in the NFL. He earned his bachelor's degree from Valdosta State and his master's from Troy. We are excited about adding Herb, his wife Deanna, and daughter Adalyn to the Pirate family.

Courtney Smith was hired this week as assistant athletic trainer and will be the head trainer for the women's soccer program. Courtney, who earned her bachelor's degree from West Virginia University, was recently assistant athletic trainer for women's basketball at Appalachian State. She was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at UNC Greensboro where she earned a master's degree.

As we move forward together, I want to thank you for your continued support of ECU Athletics.

Go Pirates!

Jon
