Marc Stout said he doesn’t like Oracle Park in San Francisco because he threw up there once, and that sums up the series pretty accurately as the Colorado Rockies fall to the San Francisco Giants in a 4-0 shutout to cement getting swept. The Rockies fall to 3-7 in the young season after their first road series of the year, and find themselves in the basement of the National League West.
Failure to launch a recurring theme
The constant during this first road series was a failure to capitalize on offensive opportunities. After a homestand where the Rockies scored at least five runs in 6 of 7 games, they failed to score more than three in any of the three games against San Francisco. Today the Rockies were just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position while leaving 12 runners stranded on base, getting shut out despite eight hits and four walks. The skidding Rockies offense was just 2-for-15 with RISP for the series. In his post-game interview, skipper Bud Black blamed the RISP woes on a roster with young players and low service time, but this has been a consistent problem the last few seasons —one that the Rockies need to finally sort out.
Germán Márquez salvages rocky first inning for a solid start
Germán Márquez made his third start of the 2021 season, but got off to a rough start. In a lengthy first inning that saw his pitch count jump close to 40, Márquez had a full count against four of the six batters he faced as the Giants gained an early 2-0 lead. He patched things up in the second with a much faster inning, then struck out three batters in both the third and fourth to salvage the start. Unfortunately he couldn’t make it through the sixth inning, giving up a solo home run and left the game with the bases loaded for Robert Stephenson to finish off. Márquez’s final line of the night: 5 2⁄3 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO, 2 HR.
Jordan Sheffield continues to impress
Rule 5 pick Jordan Sheffield skipped straight from Double-A to the big leagues for the 2021 season, and he’s making the most of the opportunity he’s been given. Sheffield made his fourth appearance of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning. He found himself in a bit of trouble by hitting a batter, but ended with a scoreless frame. So far this season, Sheffield has pitched 3 2⁄3 scoreless innings while allowing one hit and no walks.
Carlos Estévez still looking shaky
The Rockies’ hard-throwing big man struggled immensely during the 2020 season and spring training, and is not showing much in terms of improvement. Estévez has an ERA of 8.31 in five appearances, and gave up a run during a difficult eighth inning this afternoon. Estévez struggled with command and finding his rhythm, giving up a double, a single, and walking a batter. The damage would have been much worse if not for Garrett Hampson and Raimel Tapia bailing him out with some excellent defensive plays.

The Rockies are off tomorrow as they head south to start a three game series against the dreaded Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. Antonio Senzatela get the start for Colorado, following a truly excellent eight innings of shutout baseball his last time out. The Dodgers will send out Trevor Bauer, who struck out 10 the last time he faced the Rockies before collapsing late.
