opinionfrom.blogspot.com
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team will look to pull off the upset in the semifinal round of the 2021 Liberty League Tournament on Wednesday, as the third-seeded Dutchwomen head to Geneva to take on second-seeded and IWLCA #19 William Smith College at Boswell Field at David J. Urick Stadium.

Union (4-4, 3-3 Liberty League) returns to the postseason for the first time since 2016 after finishing third in the conference standings. William Smith (6-4, 6-2 Liberty League) is the second seed this year after dropping only two conference games, both to nationally ranked Ithaca College.

POSTSEASON HISTORY: Union will be making its 13th appearance in the conference tournament and is 13-9 all-time in Liberty League Tournament play entering 2021. The Dutchwomen have three Liberty League Tournament championships (2005, 2006, 2015) to their credit and have won five conference titles overall, including a pair of UCAA regular-season titles (1999, 2002) before the conference tournament was instituted in 2004.

UNION VS. THE HERONS: The Dutchwomen and Herons have met 32 times previously, with William Smith holding a 21-11 advantage – including wins in each of the last four meetings. The teams have met four times in the conference tournament: William Smith beat Union in the 2004 title game, while Union earned semifinal victories in 2007, 2008 and 2014.

ALL ABOUT THE DRAW: Union enters the week ranked fourth in Division III by averaging 18.5 draw controls per game. Senior Lindsay Gerrato ranks 10th individually in the country by averaging more than eight per game and sits second all-time at Union with 208 career draw controls. Despite playing only eight games so far this season, Gerrato still ranks sixth in school history with 67 draw controls this year; her 95 in 2019 is currently second on the school's all-time list.

OFFENSIVE-MINDED: The Dutchwomen are 34th in Division III and second in the Liberty League in scoring offense, averaging 16.25 goals per game. Sophomore Sydney McPartlon leads the team with 27 goals on 50 shots, while Gerrato has a team-leading 36 points on 25 goals and 11 assists. Junior Grace Heiting has been a primary playmaker for the team this year, posting a team-best 12 assists to go with 18 goals.

SENIOR MOMENT: Union reached the conference tournament with a 19-13 victory over Clarkson University on Saturday on Senior Day. Isabel Bush netted a career-high six goals, Gerrato controlled 13 draws, and Kat Heaney caused three turnovers to lead the seniors in their final regular-season home game.

ABOUT THE HERONS: Sophomore Maddie Montgomery has been the team's top offensive weapon on both ends of the field this season, leading the team with 33 goals. Another Montgomery, senior Mekayla, paces the defense with 25 caused turnovers and 37 ground balls. As a team, William Smith leads the Liberty League in scoring defense (9.40 gpg), caused turnovers per game (11.0) and ground balls per game (2.40).

WHAT'S NEXT: The winner of today's game will face the winner of Wednesday's other semifinal between top-seeded Ithaca College and fourth-seeded St. Lawrence University in the conference championship game, to be held on Saturday at the site of the higher seed.
