Luis Rojas provided updates on Seth Lugo‘s status on Saturday. Lugo of course has been out since February to remove a bone spur in his elbow, and officially began the season on the injured list.
Rojas said that Lugo has been throwing for the past week, and is playing catch from as far as 75 feet. Tim Healey of Newsday noted that the Mets originally estimated that Lugo would be back in mid-May, but he started throwing two days ahead of schedule, so that timeline could scoot nearer in the future.
Lugo’s eventual return will be huge for this Mets squad that could always use all the bullpen help it can get. Lugo was dominant in the reliever’s role in 2018 and 2019, especially 2019 when he posted 11.7 K/9, 1/80 BB/9 and 2.3 fWAR in 61 appearances. While he struggled in the shortened 2020 season, his BABIP and peripherals suggest that he ran into some bad luck.
Slotting Lugo into a late-inning role will only strengthen this team even more, and it looks like the Mets are on track to doing so.
